Lyric tragedy in 5 acts by André Cardinal Destouches
“At the end of the world, on the mythical island of Ogygia, as Neptune unleashes the storm, Calypso tries to seduce a young and handsome castaway named Telemachus. Will Ulysses’ son succumb to the nymph’s dangerous charms? Will he resist Adraste’s hatred?”
After Semiramis, Les Ombres continue to explore the fascinating work of the musketeer musician André Cardinal Destouches. Telemachus & Calypso reveals Destouches’ distinct dramatic effectiveness, always favoring the “liveliness of delivery” and the natural flow of declamation in his narratives. The work also echoes the composer’s devotion to Louis XIV, who was nearing the end of his life, with a grand monumental chaconne of nearly 400 measures—an homage to the tradition inherited from Lully.
